28th May 2026, Kathmandu.
A Municipal Child Assembly was held in Tokha Municipality to identify priorities and propose programs and budget allocations for children in the fiscal year 2083/84 (2026/27). Representatives from child club networks of all 11 wards of the municipality participated in the assembly.
Organized in collaboration with CWIN Nepal, the assembly provided a platform for children to identify key issues affecting them and propose activities and programs to address those concerns. The recommendations and action plans developed by the children were formally handed over to Deputy Mayor Murari Tamang, Chief Administrative Officer Kamal Bhattarai, and members of the municipal executive committee.
The children urged the municipality to prioritize programs aimed at preventing and responding to violence and abuse against children in the upcoming fiscal year’s policies, programs, and budget. They also called for the elimination of corporal punishment in schools and the promotion of safe and fear-free learning environments. Other priorities included training for teachers on child rights and child protection, parenting education, awareness on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and child-focused initiatives to prevent and respond to online violence and abuse.
Receiving the recommendations, Deputy Mayor Tamang expressed commitment to incorporating children’s voices and concerns into the municipality’s planning and budgeting process. He shared that Tokha Municipality is working towards being declared a Child-Friendly Local Governance Municipality by mid-December and noted that the active engagement of children would significantly contribute to achieving this goal.
As part of its ongoing support to the municipality, CWIN Nepal has provided technical assistance in developing and implementing School Child Protection Standards in all public and private schools within Tokha. According to Sagar Bhandari, Manager of Child Helpline Nepal 1098, the standards have now been implemented across all schools in the municipality.
