31 December 2025, Kathmandu.
A workshop aimed at strengthening the role of stakeholders in preventing online sexual violence, exploitation, and abuse against children in Nepal was successfully conducted today.
At the workshop, Superintendent of Nepal Police, Cyber Bureau, Pradyumn Tamrakar provided information on incidents of online sexual violence and abuse against children in Nepal. According to SP Tamrakar, the Cyber Bureau receives information about nearly 100 such incidents daily not only from Nepal but also from international networks like NEMEC. The workshop also included discussions on measures to prevent these risks and possible safety measures.

Similarly, Subash Khadka, President of the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPAN), shared that approximately 90 percent of Nepalese citizens use smartphones, with an estimated 45–47 percent of users being children, according to unverified data. He noted that around 30 percent of children have weak password practices, and about 55 percent of children do not know where or how to report online violence if it occurs. He emphasized that awareness programs alone are not sufficient to prevent online violence and that programs focused on changing user behavior are necessary. He further highlighted the need for collaboration between the government and civil society organizations, using simple and easy-to-understand materials on technology-related issues.

Bam Bahadur Baniya, Vice-Chairperson of the National Child Rights Council, informed that discussions are ongoing with the relevant ministry to revise school curricula to ensure children’s online safety. He also expressed commitment to strengthen reporting mechanisms for online violence through collaboration among all stakeholders.

Participants at the workshop engaged in interactive discussions about online violence incidents, safety measures, and the complexities involved. The workshop was attended by local government officials, adolescents and youth, internet service providers, civil society organizations working on children’s online safety, and journalists. The event was organized by CWIN Nepal in partnership with Terre des Hommes Netherlands in Asia (TDH Netherlands).
