28th May 2026, Kailali.
An orientation program on the identification and referral of mental health issues among children and adolescents was conducted in community schools of Tikapur and Bhajani in Kailali district.
The program was organized by CWIN-Nepal in coordination with local authorities, and was carried out in four community schools: Mahunyal Secondary School, Bhajani, Rastriya Secondary School Belwa, Tribhuvan Secondary School Batanpur, and Karnali Secondary School Tikapur.
The orientation was conducted at the request of Tikapur Municipality following increasing concerns related to behavioural and psychosocial challenges among adolescent girls. Psychologists from Kanti Children’s Hospital facilitated the sessions for teachers and students, focusing on early identification of mental health issues and referral mechanisms.
Participants were oriented on various mental health conditions including stress-related disorders, anxiety, depression, developmental disorders such as autism and intellectual disabilities, conversion disorders, attention-related difficulties, and substance-use related concerns among children and adolescents. The sessions also emphasized the role of teachers in early identification and timely referral of students in need of support.
Facilitators highlighted available support mechanisms, including online counselling services through focal teachers and referral pathways for specialized care. It was also shared that children in distress can access helpline services by dialing 1098 for immediate support, rescue, and protection services.
