An awareness program on drug and alcohol abuse was successfully conducted in Makwanpur Gadhi Rural Municipality of Makwanpur district with the objective of strengthening prevention efforts and promoting community-level action against substance abuse.
The program was organized by CWIN Nepal with support from FORUT Norway and coordination with the local government. Participants included elected representatives from all eight wards, teachers, representatives from the police, cooperatives, and community-based organizations, along with students and teachers from 11 schools.
During the program, participants shared concerns that substance use, particularly among young people, is becoming an increasing challenge in the area. They emphasized the need for stronger and more coordinated efforts involving schools, families, local authorities, and communities to address the issue effectively.
Speakers highlighted the importance of continued awareness raising, preventive education, and community engagement to protect children and adolescents from the risks associated with substance abuse. It was also noted that children of migrant parents may face increased vulnerability, requiring stronger community and institutional support systems.
Resource persons provided insights on the social, psychological, and health impacts of substance abuse, stressing that prevention and timely intervention are key to addressing the issue. They also underscored the importance of creating supportive environments where children and young people can make informed and safe choices.
Teachers and participants emphasized the need for life skills education and stronger collaboration between schools, parents, and local authorities to address challenges such as substance abuse and child protection more effectively.
The program was attended by representatives from various schools including Chandika, Jalapa, Sharada, Bhanu, Raniserra, Banshigopal, Manakamana, Janak, Janata, Rupnarayan Secondary Schools, and Jwaladevi Basic School. Participants expressed the importance of continuing such awareness initiatives in the future.

The event was chaired by the Chairperson of Makwanpur Gadhi Rural Municipality, with the presence of ward chairpersons, social development officials, women and children’s development officials, and representatives from the local police office.
